This remarkable set remains together with its original October 25, 1977 sales receipt from Indian Nations Trading Co., documenting the purchase of the necklace and the matching earrings, a significant investment at the time, for over $4,500, adjusted for inflation. Also included are the original dealer’s business card and a typewritten letter from Arol E. Hoffman, discussing registration with the Indian Arts & Crafts Association after the piece was presented, subtly referring to the set’s original role as an unusual gift for a special employee.
The necklace is signed L. KENDY and showcases exceptional Zuni craftsmanship, with meticulously hand-cut needle-like stones of various shades of natural turquoise, handcrafted sterling silver beads, and a beautifully balanced naja pendant, regally shaped. The stones are some of the most delicate we’ve seen. The matching earrings complete a set that has remained intact for nearly five decades.
Lorraine (L.) Kendy was a Zuni respected silversmith from New Mexico. Her jewelry has been acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian.
